HISTORY AND BACKGROUND OF THE SCARVES

These types of scarves are originally headgear, worn by men in the Middle East, as a protection agains heat, cold, sun, wind, dust and dirt. The original versions were made of pure cotton or of a mix of cotton and wool, and had a red and white or black and white spider's web design.

DIFFERENT AREAS

The different colours, are often associated with a certain region. The black and white designs were worn in the Levant, the red and white in Jordan, the blue and white in the United Arab Emirates, and multi coloured variations are seen in Oman. The black and white designs are often called Arafat scarves of Palistinian scarves, due to the wearing of this headgear by the Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat.


The size of these scarves is approximately 1 x 1 metre.
The more expensive, thicker scarves are made of pure cotton.
The budget designs are made of a mix of cotton / polyester.
